Buffing Stainless Steel
The coil-to-coil buffing line operated by Combined Metals of Chicago produces the best in class #7 buffed stainless steel. The clarity, the brightness, and the depth of image in the finish are unmatched in the mechanical buffed stainless steel market. CMC uses calibrated instruments to confirm that each buffed stainless steel coil produced has the right color and clarity; CMC’s repeatability allows our customers to mix different buff stainless steel coil production lots in their process and not worry about variation in the appearance of their tanker trailer, trailer door, wheel cover, visor, or any other reflective aesthetic part.
CMC’s stainless steel coil buffing process starts with selecting only the finest incoming material. Years of data analysis have identified the key incoming material characteristics needed to provide a great final product. The stainless steel buffing line is operated by people with several years of experience. It uses six buffing heads and a proprietary combination of multiple buffing compounds and different fabrics to gradually work the buffed stainless steel surface to a high gloss finish. The result is a buffed stainless steel coil with a near #8 finish.
CMC can buff stainless steel coils ranging in thickness from 0.017” to 0.120” and anywhere from 17” to 49” wide. CMC can also produce buffed aluminum coils. Typical end users for buffed stainless steel coils are truck trailer Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMS) that are looking for 5,000 lb. coils of SS 301 (or 304) at 48” wide and 20 Ga, 22 Ga, 24 Ga, or 25 Ga. The OEMS usually use buff stainless steel as tanker jacketing / tanker wrap or truck trailer rear doors. The consistency of the appearance of buffed stainless steel or buffed aluminum helps the OEMS with their selling process, especially with fleet buyers. The appearance of the uniformly reflective buffed stainless steel or buffed aluminum finish increases the perception of quality of the equipment.
Other applications for buffed stainless steel or buffed aluminum are tool box skins, mud flaps, wheel covers, fenders, and visors. CMC’s mechanically buffed stainless steel surface is perfect for smaller fabricated items because it does not discolor when welded and can easily be repaired with a hand buffer. In combination with standard protective films, CMC’s buff stainless steel coils are readily embossed to make a reflective diamond plate.
